Developers Seek Permission to Demolish Retained Parts of Robin Hood Hotel

Following the partial demolition of the former Robin Hood Hotel, developers, M F Strawson Limited are reporting that the parts of the building left standing are in a significantly poorer state of repair than originally envisaged.

Consultant to M F Strawson Limited, Tim Bradford of Banks Long & Co explained: “Robin Hood Hotel is a Listed Building and we could not secure the support of English Heritage in the original planning application to demolish all of the building; we had to accept at that time that the cottages facing Lombard Street would be retained.  Now we can see the true condition of these cottages it has become clear that they are simply beyond repair.”

An application has now been submitted by M F Strawson Limited to Newark and Sherwood District Council seeking permission to demolish the remaining parts of the former Robin Hood Hotel.  M F Strawson Limited have completed Phase 1 of the development, the new health centre on Portland Street and are well under way with the construction of new shops and a new surgery.

Mr Bradford continued: “We believe it is in everyone’s interest to demolish these buildings and rebuild the block to allow a wider footpath along Lombard Street and provide a layout which will attract top quality tenants to Newark.  The new elevation to Lombard Street will seek to replicate the design of the three cottages.  In my mind this is a win win situation.  This is the final phase of the Asda anchored Beaumond Cross development (formerly known as Potterdyke) and we are keen to make sure that it can be completed – if we have to retain these cottages then this part of the scheme becomes unviable and it is doubtful whether it would be built.”
